example of the art of Chinoiserie, popularized when Europeans first
traveled to Asia in the early 17th century. Its fanciful landscapes are

lacquer. Crafted from select Asian hardwoods, the desk has nine drawers
on two tiers, each fitted with a burnished brass pull; the large center
drawer has a functional lock. A scalloped brass gallery rail surrounds
the top of the hutch. Long, tapered legs have routed detail and are
richly accented with gilt |
